S. Korea Seeks Clarification from Iran Over Strait of Hormuz Vessel Attack

(MENAFN) South Korea has called on Iran to clarify its position regarding a recent attack involving a South Korean-operated cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports released Sunday.

The issue was discussed during a phone conversation between South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, according to statements cited by reports.

During the talks, Cho said Seoul is continuing its investigation into the incident involving the HMM Namu, a Panama-flagged cargo ship operated by South Korean shipping company HMM Co. He reportedly asked Tehran to clarify its stance and provide information regarding the circumstances surrounding the attack.

The South Korean minister also stressed the importance of guaranteeing safe navigation and freedom of movement for commercial vessels traveling through the strategically important waterway, including ships connected to South Korea.

According to reports, Araghchi outlined Iran’s perspective on the broader Middle East situation and agreed on the importance of restoring secure passage through the Strait of Hormuz, while also calling for a rapid resolution to the ongoing regional confrontation.

Both sides reportedly agreed to maintain close communication to help safeguard South Korean vessels and crew members operating in the area.

A government investigative team previously concluded that the HMM Namu was struck by two unidentified flying objects on May 4, causing an explosion and fire aboard the vessel. South Korean officials have stated that investigations are still underway to determine who was responsible for the attack.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the region following military exchanges involving the United States, Israel, and Iran earlier this year. According to reports, Tehran later retaliated against Israel and several US-aligned Gulf states, while the Strait of Hormuz also faced disruptions and closures.

A ceasefire later took effect on April 8 through mediation efforts led by Pakistan, though follow-up negotiations in Islamabad reportedly failed to secure a permanent settlement. Reports also indicated that US President Donald Trump subsequently extended the truce indefinitely.
